  • Road To The 2022 World Cup:

In order to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Iran national football team were tasked with qualifying across two group stages. The Second Round qualifiers saw 8 groups of 5 teams compete, of which the teams that finished first and second will progress to the Third Round.

During the Third Round qualifiers, there are two groups of 6 divided into Group A and Group B. Out of these two groups, the teams that finish first and second will qualify for the World Cup tournament.

Iran was able to finish top of both of their groups across the second and third-round groups. This is likely due to the fact that they have been managed by Dragan Skocic for the past 2 years, being able to get used to a new style of play and understanding their role in their team.

Time will tell how well Iran will perform in this year’s World Cup tournament in Qatar, however, one thing is for certain - they are sure to give everything they have for their nation and their fans.

  • Key Players:

    A Leader At The Back

Ehsan Hajsafi is an experienced left-back who has garnered a plethora of individual honours for his performances across his years of playing the beautiful game. Currently the captain for Iran, Ehsan will ensure he provides a defence that is organised and ready to complete the task Tat hand.

In 2009, Hajsafi was selected as the most promising player in Asian football. Of course, this means that he is now older than the reputation he had then, this still means he has a spark of magic that he can implement.

With his age, Ehsan Hajsafi has been referred to as a utility player, able to play in multiple positions such as; left midfielder, defensive midfielder, winger and his natural position - left-back.

    A Prolific Striker

Mehdi Taremi is a capable and prolific striker who always takes his opportunity to help his team. Currently playing for Porto, who are likely to win back to back league trophies with Taremi as one of their attacking threats. Mehdi Taremi has scored 36 goals in 64 games for Porto, with his record for Iran looking just as successful. Scoring 27 goals in 57 games for Iran, Taremi will surely be one of the players to keep your eyes on for some exciting attacking attempts at the opposition.

He is also a fan favourite having won the UEFA Fans’ Goal of the Tournament during the 2020-21 season for Porto. This stunning overhead kick came against Chelsea during the second leg of the Quarter-Finals. Despite this unbelievable goal in additional time, it still wasn’t enough to send them through as they lost 2-1 across the two legs. Regardless, it will long live in the memory.

    Additional Attacking Depth

As well as Mehdi Taremi, Iran is graced with having Sardar Azmoun at their disposal to either play alongside or take Taremi’s place. Having recently left Zenit after a four-year spell, appearing in 79 games and scoring 52 goals. Azmoun now plays for Bayer Leverkusen having appeared in 7 games and adding himself to the score sheet - his stats for Iran are only more impressive.

Having made 62 appearances since 2013, while scoring 40 goals - he will surely want to prove himself in this year’s World Cup tournament.
