For Arsenal, Premier League meetings with Liverpool Football Club aren’t normally too much of a worrying ordeal with only one loss in the past nine games against the north west reds. However after being hit by a loss to Stoke City, Liverpool battered Arsenal’s already demoralised attitude in the third game of the season finishing 4-0 which left Arsenal supporters outraged. Conveniently, following the shaky start for the Gunners, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was able to leave Arsenal and join the victors from the previous week. However, the remaining squad and manager now have a bigger problem on their hands. The end of September presents three games in three competitions for Arsenal, all within one week.

The ever increasing amount of pressure on Arsene Wenger to start meeting the expectations of the club has become apparent in recent results. However he has somehow gathered some new found optimism and states that “We can still win the title”. Could this mean a certain disregard for other competitions in order to make his dream a reality? Both Cologne and Doncaster Rovers will be hoping so as Chelsea provide ample distraction for Wenger’s side in the middle of September.

Arsenal and Chelsea last stood toe to toe at the beginning of August for the FA Community Shield where a draw led to Arsenal defeating Chelsea on penalties. Unlike Arsenal, the Chelsea side has only improved since the start of the season and unless tactics and attitude are changed by Wenger, the Blues may further damage Arsenal. The result is not set in stone though as Chelsea have also had their problems so far this season, marked by the shock defeat to Burnley on the first matchday of the year, and the ongoing disruption caused by Brazilian forward Diego Costa regarding his improbable future at the club. Although they have won two out of their three Premier League games this season, they don’t appear to be showing signs of invincibility.

Similar to Arsenal, Doncaster Rovers occupy the bottom half of their league. Both in a state of desperate need of improvement, the Carabao Cup fixture at The Emirates Stadium on Wednesday the 20th of September will be an opportune moment for both clubs to prove their worth. A loss for Arsenal however could create a vote of no confidence in Wenger amongst the Arsenal fans. An event it would seem German Midfielder Mesut Ozil has already anticipated by commanding highly influential Arsenal Legends to “Stop talking and start Supporting."

Arsenal v Cologne tickets in the Europa League will prove to be another early test for the North London club. Both sides finished fifth in their respective leagues last season and will now play each other at The Emirates Stadium on Thursday the 14th of September in the group stages of the Europa League. Once again this will provide an opportunity for two under performing sides to show their worth as Cologne are currently in the relegation zone following two games, two losses. An even more delicate situation than their rivals.

Whatever the outcomes of the upcoming games for Arsenal are, the start of the 2017/18 season hasn’t been the most ideal for Arsene Wenger and unless the situation improves, his future with the club may be shorter than he expected. Having said that, it is still only the start of the season and the Arsenal manager’s optimism towards coming out on top is still achievable, but at this moment, looking unlikely.
