Lyon is the third largest city in France and will be one of the main cities where football supporters will base themselves this summer for Euro 2016.

 

Lyon is one of the most dynamic cities in the country and often referred to as France’s ‘Second City’, after Paris. The city is beautiful with numerous parks and  riverbanks running alongside its two main rivers, the Rhone and the Saone, with the old city being listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

 

The ‘Old Lady’ also boasts some of the best cuisine in France and is known as the ‘Gourmet Capital’ with its fair share of local eateries and Michelin star restaurants across the city.

Lyon will host six matches throughout the tournament at the famous Stade des Lumieres which will include; four Group Stage matches, a Quarter-Final, and a Semi-Final.

Getting Around:

It is highly recommeded that travelling fans purchase a Lyon City Card upon arrival in Lyon. This will give them public transport access and also includes a number of other perks, such as a city tour, cruise, and access to the city’s museums. A one-day pass is 22 euro, or 42 euro for a three day pass.

 

Lyon has four Metro lines, two railways, five tram lines and many bus routes making one of the more easier cities to navigate around. A range of ticket types can also be purchased including two-hour, evening and day passes.

From Lyon by rail it is less than two hours to Marseille,  three hours to Lille and four hours to Paris, making it a hub for European football fans.

Lyon also has two airports, the main one being Lyon Saint-Exupery airport which connects the city to 120 destinations in 40 different countries. The railway station at the airport also has connections to Paris Charles-De-Gaulle and is situated next to the motorway network making navigation around the city simple. A tram service also operates from the airport and can have fans in the city in under 30 minutes.

 

Where to watch the games:

The Stade des Lumieres is located 12km from the city centre and 15km from Lyon Saint-Exupery airport with numerous routes by road and rail.

In Lyon, a large Fan Zone will be set up in Place Bellecour. Here people will be able to watch matches in real time on giant screens, with the public able to take part in a number of events on matchday.
