The struggles of teams that are in or around the relegation zone are making things interesting in the EPL. Some big teams are still in danger of being relegated. Every English Premier League club is always in contention. For this reason, many believe that the league is the best in Europe. As a result, we can expect fierce competition from the football clubs in the team.

On August 13, 2021, the English Premier League 2021/22 season commences and it is expected to be wrapped up by May 22, 2022. Every club in the league is expected to play 38 games.

Since the league comprises 20 football clubs, every team is expected to play against all the other teams in the league in both home and away fixtures. Every club in the league is expected to play 38 games. The three teams that win the fewest points will be relegated and will join the Championship division.

When the three clubs with the fewest points in the EPL are demoted to the Championship, the three clubs with the highest points in the Championship will be promoted to the English Premier League.

In most cases, the football clubs that are most likely to be relegated are the ones that have just recently been promoted to the English Premier League. Since they might not be familiar with the intensity of the league or maybe because of the lack of top-flight football players.

How Relegation Works in the English Premier League

Derby County holds the premier league record for becoming the team with the earliest confirmation of relegation in history. Their fate was decided on March 29, 2008, after a home draw against Fulham, even though they still had six more matches to play in the season. Since then, for consecutive seasons, they have been in the championship division.

As a consequence of the arrangement of fixtures in the league, there is no deadline for the announcement of the relegating teams in the Premier League. To be sure that certain teams will be relegated, it must be clear that their chances of finishing in the top 17 or above the table are no longer realistic. Relegating teams do not need to wait till the final day of the season to find out.

Relegation is a significant aspect of the soccer system in England, which distinguishes it from the Major League Soccer (MLS) structure in the United States, where promotion or relegation does not work. Relegation is considered crucial to sports integrity in the English football system.

Relegation adds to the overall entertainment value of the English Premier League. Since the division does not feature a play-off system, some football clubs might not see a need to be competitive if the danger of relegation were removed from the equation. Relegation fights may be as exciting as title fights, if not more.

Football Clubs With High Odds of Relegating in the 2021/22 Season

Norwich

Norwich City, under Daniel Farke, finished first in the 2020/21 Championship standings, and by a significant margin. Norwich City finished above teams like Cardiff City and Swansea City, among others, in the second division. The club fired him in early November after the team had a dismal start to the Premier League in the 2021/22 season. Dean Smith took over as the new coach.

The Canaries embarked on an eight-game losing streak under the previous Aston Villa manager before making a minor comeback with back-to-back victories under the current manager. The team had gone winless in their previous seven games, losing six of them, and were languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table. They were also easily knocked out of the league cup competition by a defeat against Liverpool.

The Norwich City Football Club, alongside West Bromwich Albion in the history of the Premier League, happens to be the club to have been relegated the most. These football clubs have already been relegated five times since the inception of the English Premier League in 1992.

Burnley

Finishing in 17th position in the 2020/21 season, with 16 points above Sheffield United, the team in 20th position. Sean Dyche's men are having a horrible run in the Premier League in the 2021/22 season again. Burnley Football Club seemed to have emerged from their dungeon of defeat after winning victories against Tottenham and Brighton in their most recent three-game undefeated streak.

However, they were unable to prolong their winning streak. They have lost three games in a row, during which they have given up eight goals without scoring any against their opponents.

Watford

Watford recently dropped into the relegation zone as the 18th team on the Premier League table, and they are now in danger of being relegated to the Championship after staying only one season in the Premier League.

Watford FC has already been managed by three different head coaches this season. Xisco Muoz was sacked after a string of poor performances in October 2021. However, things didn't go as planned after the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as their new head coach in October 2021. He was then replaced by Roy Hodson, the former England football team manager, in January 2022.

Everton

Rafa Benitez did not perform as expected. Then Frank Lampard was brought in to manage the team, but the results have been hit-and-miss so far. Everton has since then lost four games consistently before recording an anticipated 1-0 victory over Newcastle. Alex Iwobi scored shortly before the end of the match at Goodison Park. Despite this, they remain just one point above the relegation zone. The team still had a bad day against Crystal Palace with a 4:0 defeat.

Leeds United

Leeds United was a joy to watch in the 2020/21 season under Marcelo Bielsa. But a shaky start to the current season has some observers doubting whether they will be able to recreate their previous season's successes this time around.

They seemed considerably too inconsistent and defensively vulnerable in the 2021/22 campaign, which finally resulted in the dismissal of Bielsa. Leeds had a devastating outing against Aston Villa in the league game when they lost 3:0 and also against Leicester City when they lost 5:1.

Since then, Jesse Marsch has taken over, and the former RB Leipzig boss has stopped an eight-match winless drought with significant wins against Norwich and Wolves since taking over at the club.

Brentford

Even though this is Brentford's first season in the EPL, they have appeared comfortable, at least for periods in the top division. Thomas Frank's team has had a lot of success. They have won against big teams like Arsenal and West Ham.

Despite this, Brentford is just three points above the relegation zone. They have been pulled into a relegation war despite their promising start to the season. The team's recent eight-game losing streak caused significant disruption to their momentum.
